what is reflexology

reflexology is both a science and an art.

It is a science that deals with the theory or principle that within the feet, hands and ears there are reflex areas that correspond to the organs, glands and all parts of the body.

The therapist will use specialized techniques such as reflex rotations and walking the thumbs and fingers on these reflex areas.

It is often referred to as one of the healing arts.

History of reflexology

Originally known as reflex zone therapy, reflexology is a holistic therapy that deals with you as a whole, looking at you and your lifestyle. It treats the whole person not just the symptoms of any dis ease or illness. Reflexology is a drug free therapy.

The origins date back to the ancient Egyptians and ancient Chinese cultures. Also the Incas used zone therapy which is still being used in North American Indian cultures.

The birth of modern reflexology began with Dr William Fitzgerald. Born in 1872, he graduated in medicine in 1895. He eventually became an ear, nose and throat specialist While he was working in Vienna he studied the work of Dr H Bresslar, who has researched the link  between pressure points on the feet and the internal organs of the body, he published his findings in a book , Zone Therapy.

Dr Fitzgerald began practising zone therapy on his patients using various instruments including rubber bands and probes, He soon discovered that certain points on the foot when pressure was applied induced anaesthesia in specific parts of the body. Continued research led him on his journey of discovery to his formula of division of the body into 10 equal longitudinal energy zones.

Dr Fitzgeralds theories were not particularly well received by the medical profession, however one Doctor Joseph Riley was so impressed that he attended Fitzgeralds course on zone theory, to use in his own practice.
It was in Dr Rileys practice that a therapist by the name of  Eunice Ingham,  instigated what we know today as reflexology.

Eunice dedicated her life to the study of reflexology. She, through her research found that the feet provided a mirror image to the entire body. Eunice Ingham was the mother of modern reflexology, she wrote two books in her lifetime one Stories the feet can tell and Stories the feet have told.

How Reflexology works

The therapist uses  various techniques of the thumbs and fingers to help clear blockages in any particular zone, therefore helping the body to balance, thus creating homeostatsis.

The belief that disharmony in the body arises from chi  that lies stagnant and reflexology can help free the blocked energy by working on a particular zone. Sometimes the therapist may find a small crystal depost, which is a build up of uric acid and the therapist helps to break these down using a technique called reflex rotation.

About the treatment

An in depth consultation to check your medical history, your likes and dislikes and lifestyle is always taken before the treatment begins. The consultation last about 15 minutes.

The treatment starts with cleansing the feet and energy contact.Talc or balm is then applied to the feet.  Relaxation techniques are then used to loosen the feet ready for the reflexology treatment. The whole of the body, mind and spirit is then worked through the feet also parts of the lower leg. The actual reflexology last around 50 minutes to an hour. Once the Reflexology techniques are finished the feet are then cleansed with Rose Water or Frankincense and Orange water and then treated to a special foot massage using Shea Butter creams with added essential oils.

The treatment is finished off with some deep breathing techniques. The whole treatment lasts just over an hour.

A course of treatments is usually recommended. After which twice monthly or monthly treatments are recommended as follow up. Dependent on lifestyle and stress levels.

After the treatment

You may experience the self healing process and may have a slight headache or want to relieve your bladder more than usual. You may feel tired or you may feel full of energy.
Reflexolgy reacts differently to each individual.

Aftercare advice is given.

MOXIBUSTION FOR BREACH BABIES

Moxibustion for Breech Presentation

Breech position

The turning of breech babies has long been well known to repsond to a treatment called moxibustion. By burning a fragrant herb over one of the acupuncture points, it can relax the muscles in the uterus allowing the baby to turn.

The moxibustion is done by taking a moxa stick (a stick of compressed herbs the size of a candle) and lighting the end. This herb then smoulders and the heat radiates into the point. This is done over the point on each side for fifteen minutes each day for 1 week.

Moxibustion is a completely safe and very gentle way of attempting to turn babies. The best results are often gained before week 36/37 as after this stage there is so little room for the baby to move. I have however had babies that have turned at week 38/39.

Usually only one treatment is required, where the therapist will guide you how to use the moxi stick to continue the treatment at home.
